BASIC PRESCRIPTION DRUG INVESTIGATIONS: August 16, 2017

Location:  Joint Forces Headquarters – Raleigh, NC

Length: 1 Days (8 hours)

Designed For: Personnel from any law enforcement agency interested in investigating or the diversion of legitimate pharmaceuticals into illicit markets. This class will be beneficial to uniformed, regulatory and narcotics officers who come in contact with individuals who may be involved in this diversion of legitimate pharmaceuticals.

Prerequisites: Students must be sworn law enforcement officers or currently serving in a law enforcement capacity as a member of the United States Armed Forces. Priority of registration is given to state and local civilian law enforcement officers.

Description: This course presents an overview of the investigative knowledge and tools required to conduct cases involving the movement and sale of licit prescription drugs.

Curriculum covers:

• Introduction to the various classes of abused drugs
•  Investigation Examples from self-users/abusers to trafficking by organized crime and terrorist groups.
• Practical exercises to provide a better understanding of perpetrator(s).
• A comparison of similarities will be made between typical narcotics work and pharmaceutical diversion.
• Pharmaceutical diversion report writing and search warrant preparation will be covered to make this a complete overview on “How to Conduct a Pharmaceutical Diversion Investigation.”

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Review issues surrounding use and abuse of pharmaceuticals
• Identify pharmaceutical drugs by basic pharmacological classes
• Review tools used to conduct diversion cases
• Learn how to write a diversion report and search warrant
• Review actual cases from intelligence gathering to adjudication
• Understand lessons learned in cases and how they can be conducted more efficiently
